Have I piqued your interest? I should've. Scalded is worth more than a passing glance. Much more.
Desiree Holt and Allie Standifer have created a great little set of stories guaranteed to make your cheeks blush. I needed a cold drink and a fan for this one. I felt like I was right there with Halli and Reed as they fumbled through the motions of a relationship. I felt their emotions as if they were my own and didn't want this story to end. If I had any issue, it was that the ending was quick and I wanted more! I need to know what happened next. Although it moved with a brisk pace, it was satisfying and left me smiling.
Halli is a fun character. She's human and has issues. She sells sex toys, but she's scared to use them. Imagine being eyeball to eyeball with a sex toy that's larger than life. Yup, her apprehension is palpable. But I loved her sense of adventure. Reed isn't the type to just let her go about her business. He's alpha through and through. There were times when I thought he was almost too forward, but it was endearing because it was who he was down to his bones. And when these two get together, holy moly! It's hot and sexy and you don't want it to end. Yeah, it's that good.
If you want a story to get you in the mood or for a chilly night, then you need to read Scalded. I give this book 4.5 cherries.

Halli Wilson lives in a small apartment above her equally small coffee shop. Wanting to save up for the house of her dreams, she begins selling sex toys at parties. One evening, as she's leaving her friend, Tina's, home after one of these toy parties, police officer Reed Brody shows up to confer with Tina's husband on a case... and it's lust at first sight.
While Halli has a lot of experience in showing off her toys to prospective customers, she's never found the right man to add a little BDSM to their own play. Reed may be a computer geek on the local force but he's very dominant in his life and unfortunately can't manage to find someone into the bondage games he prefers.
Halli doesn't want her heart broken. Reed doesn't want a commitment. It starts as a no-strings-attached fling. Neither expected to want more than that. But love never asks permission.
While Scalded is Book Two in the Turn Up the Heat series, it can be read as a standalone without feeling like you've missed out on previous details. But best wear oven mitts while reading this story, for Scalded is an apropos title. Most women like a man in uniform, or at least in that sort of profession. Reed Brody fits the bill of stern, dominant and delicious. Halli is a feisty, independent, intelligent woman who wants a dominant in her life... but only on her terms. She wants him there when she wants him there, and she wants him to leave when it's over for her. The authors don't go into tremendous detail as to why she is afraid of heartache (what woman isn't?) but it's clear that Halli believes if she can keep the sex simple, she can avoid any tangles with her heart and her emotions. Reed comes across as fun-loving and commitment shy, but once he sees in Halli the woman he's been seeking for so long, he isn't about to let her go. The question is, will she allow him to catch her?
A great, steamy weekend read that only adds to this delicious series. 5 Angels.
